Review of Safety Last! (1923) by Nate W — 12 Sep 2009
This was Harold Lloyd's signature picture, and for a reason. HL was at the height of his comedic powers and his impressive gang of gag writers was at their peak as well. Many of the gags had already been done in his previous films, but they are so well crafted in "Safety Last" you don't care.
Mildred Davis (the future Mrs. HL) always seems lame to me, and I wonder what Bebe Daniels could have done with her role. The department store scenes are just a riot, and the skyscraper filming sequence is one of the greatest ever put on celluloid.
I have come to enjoy watching HL films with the books "The Harold Lloyd Encyclopedia" and "Harold Lloyd Master Comedian" handy because of the details they provide. Ironically, "Safety Last" was not HL's most profitable or best-reviewed film, but is his most famous.
