Review of Safe House (2012) by Jeremy S — 17 Oct 2012
Regular spy movie set in South Africa. Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington in yet another thriller), a famous spy that became rogue years ago, is caught by the CIA and sent to a safe house for debriefing (and torture), the young man in charge, Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds), gets the shock of his life when the facility is attacked by a group of hit men that will do anything to obtain a microchip Frost has hidden somewhere. Against all odds Matt manages to escape with Frost in hand and with instructions to keep him alive at whatever cost until a special unit gets hold of them.
In many ways this is a very entertaining standard thriller: lots of action scenes, fights, bizarre escapes, story twists and dynamic chases well combined and in reasonable doses. The plot proposes a moral dilemma that is somewhat predictable but makes it stand out of the crowd of stereotypical or repetitive films. It isn't a ground breaking effort but it will keep you amused for 100 min.
