The filmic equivalent of a heightened headache that induces hallucinations. Todd Haynes, one of the leaders of the New Queer Cinema, is bent on engaging you in a staredown. In the end, you lose and join the same cult-like group that Julianne Moore's character does.
"2001: A Space Odyssey" without, um, the space odyssey. Are you curious now? :).
