Review of Safe (1995) by Donald T — 18 Mar 2008
Before their collaboration on "Far From Heaven", Julianne Moore and Todd Haynes, the director, unleashed this dark, quietly unsettling vision of a woman under siege. Moore plays Carol White, an apparent victim of environmental illness, whose health, both mental and physical, becomes increasingly worse.
Haynes is a visual stylist - the L.A. he presents is one where the sun and palm trees cannot mask the lingering dangers of exhaust and nauseous chemicals. Moore is brilliant as she conveys the nuances of a woman who may or may not be sick - are her symptoms real or psychologically induced? Some may find the ending a real downer, but it does offer a glimmer of hope for its heroine.
Highly recommended.
