Review of Safe (1995) by Dan S — 23 Jan 2015
Ambiguity that works, slow moving, 'meditative' in a strong, good way, with the real breakout performance of Julianne Moore's career as a woman on the verge of a world breakdown. eerie. really eerie.
I'm still not sure what to totally make of it, but it's making me think more than I expected. a rich, full experience. and remarkable more is to look at how many films Haynes has made - Velvet Goldmine, Far from Heaven, I'm Not There, Mildred Pierce - and they're all different styles, every approach breaking new ground.
Safe is like the best AIDS movie not (fully) about AIDS of the modern era.
