Review of Sadgati (1981) by Dustin I — 05 Dec 2011
A very good thriller, but I feel its reputation as a classic suspense masterpiece is a little overblown. It is relatively slow moving and has little actual conflict and I found it quite anticlimactic.
From all I had heard about it, I was expecting a much darker film with alot more menace. Its menacing scenes are hair-raising and edge of your seat, but I wanted more of them. I was under the impression the main antagonist was going to be the backwoods hillbillies, but in the majority of the film the river itself becomes the main villain.
The acting is what raises the film from decent thriller to very good thriller. Every actor is spot on, including and especially Reynolds. Its amazing how much more seriously I can take him as an actor without his ridiculous pornstache. The script (while minimalistic) is quite good, and the cinematography takes full advantage of its beautiful backdrops.
Excellently directed and acted movie but it sputters a bit on the overall atmosphere and drive. But don't let the negatives I've mentioned fool you; this is still a very very good film.
