Review of Saboteur (1942) by Callum R — 02 Aug 2008
The first Hitchcock film with an all-american cast has numerous problems. At time of writing it's his most inconsistent film overall. There are some great iconic moments here and there such as the ball room dance and film duo Lane and Cummings have great chemistry. Other problems lie in the originality of the story, it all seems rather familiar. The enemies have 2D depth and the abrupt poorly done ending ruins the film in some aspects.
The dialogue sequences are delivered well enough, but the film has aged terribly. Despite its problems, the film remains enojyable and the full 1 hr 45 mins are well spent. It never drags or strays in one scene too long, Hitchcock knows how to keep a plot moving. The master of suspense fails though in all but a couple of scenes. The tension is rather sedate. Sedate is the best way to describe this film. Good enough, but doesn't do anything he hasn't done better. Disappointing for its age but good.
