Review of Ryan's Daughter (1970) by Steven B — 10 Nov 2008
Exquisite. And grotesque. The storm sequence is stunning, as is the lyrical bit o' coitus amongst the shrubberies. But the shrieking town harpies and John Mills' GHASTLY caricature (an OSCAR, f'real?!) represent the worst of Lean's dramatic sensibilities.
Valiant attempt by Bolt to tweak Madame Bovary. Trevor Howard is this pic's unsung hero.
