Review of Ryan's Daughter (1970) by Patrick-Thomas G — 13 Oct 2009
1916 Ireland during the British Occupation following the Easter Uprising but just before the Irish Civil War, this tumultuous era is the back drop for this film. This movie is directed by David Lean, the director of "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Doctor Zhivago", so as you can imagine the picturesque landscapes of Ireland come across very well in this film.
The direction and acting are superb, the only problem that I have with the movie lies within the story. It is just that this film is a downer, there is no real substantial light at the end of the tunnel with this movie.
This film is deftly disguised as a secret forbidden romance, that is where it begins but it quickly devolves into an epic tragedy.
