Review of Rust and Bone (2012) by Mathieu F — 20 Jun 2012
What could have been too sentimental becomes beautifully absorbing. This is one of the finest romance films out there, a tale of a friendship that develops into an affecting romance. It doesn't drown in kitsch and hits you right in the middle of your heart. What is impressive about the movie is the fact that Matthias Schoenaerts' character's evolving relationship with his sister and his son is so convincing and real, and at least as important as this love affair with Stephanie. It is about how our lives are shaped by the people we love. We cling to each other and from that the direction of our lives is decided.
The cinematography is stunning and powerful, the music emotion-grabbing. The acting performances are wonderfully natural and strong. Marion Cotillard goes deep and delivers one of her best performances.
All these factors make this film a real experience and I really recommend you not to miss it! It is a film for your mind, your body and your soul.
