It's hard to judge films like this because it's very well written and the actors are great in their roles but it's not the happiest of movies! It's not the kind of movie you'll go back to and watch over.
However, the director and the actors do a very good job of keeping us rooting for two characters who are pretty unsympathetic and the main male lead role especially is particularly unlikeable. It is to their credit that we want them to survive and to be together whereas in the hands of a weaker director and actors they would have just come across as really annoying.
