Review of Rust and Bone (2012) by Mike P — 18 Nov 2012
Marion Cotillard loses her legs (literally) and finds herself in a relationship with Ali (Matthias Schoenaerts) a backstreet-fighter and not-so- Knight in Shining Armour. It's a demanding film (the scene where Cotillard wakes up in hospital after her accident to discover her legs amputated is serious stuff), but Jacques Audiard has created yet another masterpiece of stylized realism.
Both central characters have serious defects about their natures, but somehow their journey together elevates them a little above the ordinary. This winds up to quite an emotional climax that packs a tremendous punch.
Not everyone's cup of tea, but if you like your cinema to be challenging and emotionally demanding, this could be for you.
