Review of Rust and Bone (2012) by Patrick F — 13 Jan 2013
One of the reasons art movies don't have commercial success is due to the fact they work extremely hard to bum you out. I have a feeling more often than I would like, art-house flicks are tortured for the sake of being painful, not because it adds value to the story.
Rust and Bone is the canonical artistic movie. It's in French, has plenty of drama, a super hot woman loses her legs and a child almost dies. Had any of the dogs died and it would have been 100% formulaic. However, for all it's pretensions I didn't find it particularly well acted and it was so painful that it's really hard to watch.
Another failure in R&B is that there doesn't really seem to be any point. This is not really a story of redemption or even reinvention. The plot might try to indicate otherwise but I didn't feel empathy for some of the characters. The ones that deserved it, really make it hard for one to like them much.
Another decent movie that could have been a lot better if it didn't ramble and obsess in the pain and suffering.
