Review of Rust and Bone (2012) by Gareth D — 20 Oct 2013
Meandering, soapy melodrama that initially appears to be another 'issue' movie about coping with disability and how it affects people around them - instead turns out to be about a recently legless woman named Stephanie (Marion Cotillard), who eventually finds confidence and value again when she is sexually satisfied by useless, neglectful single father, Ali (Matthias Schoenaerts).
By the end, the film concentrates on Ali's far less interesting or sympathetic story arc, and throws Stephanie's development in the narrative to the wind in way for a contrived 'ending'.
It just reeks slightly of antiquated misogyny --and seems to be in love with alpha male machismo. Audiard should return to the crime genre where he's at home(The Beat That My Heart Skipped, A Prophet), as his macho-pulp sensibility clouded this picture.
