Review of Russian Ark (2002) by Andrew A — 03 Jun 2007
I found myself dozing off multiple times in the duration of this 87-minute long, single take movie. But not from boredom at all. Well, it was at 2 in the morning. But no, instead I felt like I was in a dream, like I was asleep and waiting for the next dream to come.
The cinematography, complete lack of explanation (or want of it), the scene never ending throughout the entire piece, and the ignorance of time and space make this one abstract, surreal, and beautiful movie.
It seems, with all the mystery surrounding the Stranger and everything else, like it's supposed to feel like a dream. That character certainly does remind you of someone you meet in a dream; eccentric, likeable, uncontrollable, but without an identity, and you know you'll never see them again once you wake up.
Great avant-garde film. Recommended to those who like this kind of thing, or who just have lots of patience.
