Review of Russian Ark (2002) by Giulia M — 14 Jul 2008
One really has to be appreciative of this type of film to really enjoy it. That's the strongest, most objective thing I can say about it. What sort of person enjoys it, then? Well, that's the subjective bit.
I loved this movie. LOVED it. It is one long take, yes, and because Sokurov, my favorite Russian director, didn't have much time to do more than a few takes, there are some things that are not perfect due to time constraints.
But I found them easy to ignore, and found this film to be an enjoyable, dazzling, eccentric, light-hearted, good-humored exploration of Russian history. Sadly, it really isn't for everyone as, among other things, it does feel like one has not blinked in an hour and a half, but even that doesn't bother me.
Brilliant and wonderful film, I say.
