Review of Russian Ark (2002) by Matt C — 15 Feb 2012
A 95 minute meditation on the history, politics art and culture of Russia over the last several hundred years, this is a supremely moving and haunting film. The film was shot as one continuous take through the rooms and grounds of Hermitage museum in St.
Petersburg, as the narrator and his provocative guide move through various art galleries and scenarios from Russian history, often gorgeous but also often under the shadow of imminent tragedies know to the narrator and us, if not the participants.
It's hard to convey the full dreamlike beauty and scope of this classic in a review, you really ahve to see it for yourself.
