This technical tour-de-force is staggering - a single continuous take, a cast of thousands, a single day of filming - it's a momentous achievement, and you wonder whether anyone would ever bother to try and ever repeat it.
The effect on film is simple, supernatural and timeless. Unless you're an expert on Russian history, expect plenty of googling if you want any chance of understanding what it's all about - there is meditation here, but not much narrative.
