Review of Russian Ark (2002) by Andrew H — 17 Oct 2012
Russian Ark is kind of a mind blowing movie. It was all done in one shot and the whole time I was completely aware of the fact it was being filmed, but in the best way possible. You get the sense that as the movie progresses, tension is growing between the people behind the camera, crossing their fingers hoping something little doesn't go wrong so that they have to redo the whole thing.
You get a sense of relief when it's over because there must've been thousands of high fives among the cast and crew for getting the perfect shot. I didn't really care about the characters, but I'm sure this movie will be seen as an important milestone in cinema as well as a jumping off point when some crazy guy decides to do this again, but full of likable characters, and maybe even with a structured storyline.
