Review of Rushmore (1998) by Jack G — 28 Jun 2011
This is an...interesting one. I don't like to use the word interesting, but it's the best way to describe it. It centers around a socially awkward kid named Max (Jason Schwartzman). Max is terrible at school, but he has millions of dreams and ideas about his life.
He falls in love with his teacher, who (logically) rejects him, leading Max to have an obsession while also going to a new school, dealing with a bully, meeting a girl, writing plays, and befriending Herman Blume (Bill Murray).
Jason and Bill brilliantly play similar yet different characters who seem to reflect one another. I highly compliment Bill Murray's acting in this one, not because of any comedic tactics he plays, but because of how serious and legitimate his portrayal of a lonely and depressed man.
What I enjoyed most though, was seeing the plays Max puts on. I mean, A nun gangster? Machine guns? Jets? Vietnam? ......Why Can't We Do Plays Like That At My School?!?!...Seriously though, those scenes killed me.
Well, what more can I say (other than that Rushmore is the name of the school)? I give it 4 Scottish Bullies out of 5.
