Review of Rushmore (1998) by Lucas Y — 20 Jan 2012
One of my favorites. Wes Anderson's best work in my opinion and also Bill Murray's best performance. Rushmore pays homage to several classics such as The Graduate and Catch in the Rye, but is still in a class of its own.
Anderson is amazing with the detail in every single shot. Jason Schwartzman is a modern day Holden Caulfield as Max Fischer, the kid who can do anything but struggles because he tries to do everything.
Herman Blume is one of the greatest characters ever conceived in movie history. The scene where he jumps into his pool to escape his life he hates with The Kinks playing in the background is beautiful, funny and sad all at once.
Two characters that don't get a lot of credit for the awesomeness of Rushmore, Rosemary Cross and a character we never get to see, Edward Appelbee are VERY well written into this. Max reminds Rosemary of what Appelbee was.
Herman reminds her of what Appelbee could've been. Once you make that connection, Rushmore really becomes special.
