To no disrespect of the action genre, the move by Howard to approach this project from a dramatic perspective worked strongly in his favour. While taking care in shooting brilliant racing sequences, it's the mouthing at the pits that you find yourself wanting to hear all night, and Rush makes every encounter a master-stroke.

Sharp dialogue fueled the rivalry and respect between the two races far beyond the sport and the screen.
