Review of Rush (1999) by Jim M — 21 Oct 2008
One of the slower undercover cop films and better for it. Jason Patric and Jennifer Jason Leigh are undercover cops in Texas 1974/75, trying to nail an elusive drug lord well building cases against dozens of smaller dealers, and drifiting deeper and deeper into addiction.
Based on a true story "Rush" comes out of nowhere with some great acting by its two leads, supported by two of the greatest charcter actors in the business Sam Elliot (as the cops boss) and Max Perlich (a dealer who uses too much of his own product).
Memorable is Special K MacCray as a Heroin dealer ("Like floating on a cloud of titties") and Gregg Allman (of The Allman Brothers fame) is effecting in a near wordless role as the man the cops are after.
Add to this a perfect score written by Eric Clapton (and making good use of his "Tears in Heaven"), throw in some period tunes and you have one of the best crime drama's ever made.
