Review of Running on Empty (2010) by Pete L — 02 Sep 2010
The son of a fugitive couple faces the crossroads of living his own life at the expense of losing contact with his family. Plausibly, it would have made sense (and less of a hassle) if the family had just left the country, but then there wouldn't have been much of a movie to begin with.
It's also a well-written and acted movie at that. River Phoenix gives one of the most outstanding performances I've ever seen from a teenager; his subtle expressions and quietly pained speech have such emotional weight it's no surprise he was nominated for an Oscar.
One of the better modern coming-of-age films I've seen in recent years. Turns out, it was even written by Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal's mother (who also got a nom).
