Review of Run Lola Run (1998) by Alfin N — 04 Aug 2010
A challenging and engaging film that draws on the audience to sit up and engage their cognitive tools. Run Lola Run starts with an apparently impossible premise: Lola has 20 minutes to collect 100 000 Deutschemarks and bring them to her boyfriend before he is killed.
Beyond this, it plays with temporal boundaries, and different event chains lead to different outcomes. It also gives quality time to expanding its supporting character set, offering chained snapshots of their eventual fate.
It makes good use of animation, 'touchstone' scenes to give the watcher a clear sense of timeline, and innovates the use of temporal play in film. Slippery, clever and lithe, this is a film that is sure to keep the viewer constantly surprised and searching for clues.
