Review of Rules Don't Apply (2016) by Calvin C — 27 Nov 2016
Warren Beatty's first film in 13 years and first directorial effort in 18 years is a romantic comedy set during the time of Howard Hughes in his later years. The movie is mixed bag with a lot of things that work and a lot of things that don't. The editing and story are all over the place and Beatty has trouble pacing the movie. It tries to be two things at once, but struggles at both of them. But, the performances are great, including Beatty, who plays the reclusive Hughes. It may not be Beatty's best work in front or behind the camera, but it is nice to see him back on the big screen.
Grade: B-.
