Review of Rules Don't Apply (2016) by Ryan S — 28 Nov 2016
Director/actor/writer Warren Beatty weaves a fine love story, contrasting innocent love against desperate lurchings of a rich but lonely man. Warren Beatty plays Howard Hughes, who has so much money he need not seduce starlets, they just fasll in his lap.
Two very fine actors play the Hollywood upstarts: Lily Collins and Alden Ehrfenreich, as Marla Maybrey and Frasnk Forbes. Frank is a studio driver who instantly falls in love with Marla, but by cooling his passions manages to keep his job, limo and heart from recklessly crashing, Marla, who looks like a young Liz Taylor, turns down a pass from Bobby Darrin while waiting for Howard to call from his studio.
The only trouble is that Howard is a boring engineer who tinkers with planes and uses engineer calipers to measure the size of peas on his plate. Hughes has a terrific plane crash that turns his life into pills and pain.
His relief is to remain perfectly still. Meanwhile, Marla falls hard for Frank. She c an't help it, he makes her feel like a desired woman. Finally Howard calls from the studio and Marla gets her chance at love and stardom.
When love calls, answer.
