Review of Rudderless (2014) by Brian G — 09 Mar 2015
I usually like both leads, but Yelchin was cartoonish. Crudup was fine.
Interesting, more authentic music could've saved this film - they mention The Lips and a Radical Face song in the credits - but it's almost like a suit said: "not generic enough. Gimme top 40, but cloak it in...alternative? Emo? Whatever the kids like." Not exactly the style of music that I normally like, but something like the movie Once would've been a lot better...because, again, it didn't feel contrived. I'll contradict myself and say that the song in the finale was somewhat moving.
Almost felt manipulated by this film. Felt no real emotions (until the final scene) from what could've been an interesting and sad story. I'm a composer and singer/songwriter, used to be a painter, and I like indie films. I should've liked this film.
Didn't feel like Macy, ya know. Something just "off" about it.
Okay, don't wanna spend all day writing reviews. I could get deeper. 2 stars for the idea and Crudup.
