Review of Ruby Sparks (2012) by Renatita C — 01 Nov 2012
An offbeat, unconventional romantic dramedy about Calvin, a writer (Paul Dano - Looper, There Will Be Blood) whose writer's block and lack of a romantic relationship lead him to writing about the perfect girlfriend who eventually appears in-the-flesh in his own life.
She is Ruby (Zoe Kazan - Fracture, Revolutionary Road), a pixie of a dreamgirl who is welcomed into Calvin's life until real-life relationship problems between the two lead him to write even more about Ruby in order to change her to please his new whims.
The film is somewhat of a curveball as there are plenty of laughs and a lot of charm onhand in Ruby Sparks; but some of it becomes distressing and uncomfortable as Calvin exercises his powers of manipulation over an increasingly fragile Ruby.
Kazan is the main reason to watch this film as she gives a sweet performance that hits all the right notes ... and ... Kazan also wrote the screenplay. I think it will be too pseudo-intellectual for some and a bit too quirky for others; but it is a pleasant-enough film.
The pros most definitely out-weigh the cons here.
