Review of Ruby Sparks (2012) by Alfin N — 05 Nov 2012
This is easily one of the most stand out movies this year and I think a heavy contender for some writing and acting nominations in the upcoming awards season. Billed as a romantic comedy this movie had completely different bones than one would expect going in.
Layered with dark overtones and a less than likeable protagonist, this movie plumbs the depths of what a relationship is and is not and our perceptions of the loved ones in our lives. Zoe Kazan factors heavily in this movie both as an actor, writer and consultant artistically.
This is a very personal story and you can see that every time she is on screen. Her chemistry with our less then likeable protagonist is astounding but be warned that this movie goes to a really dark place with one particular seen that will haunt my memory for a long time.
Definitely one to see but but there are emotional demons that lurk beneath the surface of a seemingly benign indie romance.
