Review of Ruby Sparks (2012) by Jessicaann D — 30 Jan 2013
Despite the film's exasperating pace at some moments which causes the story to be bogged down (esp. in the first 15 minutes), it's Zoe Kazan's original and thoughtful script that allows it to just about scrape past certain mis-steps in directing, taking a life on its own.
Not that the directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris haven't done a good job, it's just that the film certainly could have benefitted from tighter editing. They still have their A-game but in this venture, it has eroded that tad bit.
But add in compelling performances from both Kazan and Paul Dano, and you have a film that brings you through the entire experience will a magnetic pull. In this film is anything to go by, both Kazan and Dano sure have a long and fantastic career lined out for them indeed.
