Review of Ruby Sparks (2012) by Peter C — 04 Jul 2013
Ruby Sparks... a surprisingly delightful little off-beat film (a lot of adjectives, I know, but they are well earned).
It's billed as a romantic comedy, but - even though it has elements of both - it's much more than that.
A nerdy novelist with writer's block is assigned a task by his therapist.
He dreams about his perfect girl, he writes about said girl, and said girl metamorphoses into his flesh and blood partner.
What follows it a quietly comic exploration of control, obsession and trust.
Not all of it hits the mark, but strong central performances and tight direction/editing lift it from being a middle of the road rom-com to a Woody Allen-esque delight.
