Review of Ruby Sparks (2012) by Conor R — 01 Aug 2013
For quite a long period of time, I had been searching for a film that really stood out, and brought something new to the table. I was looking for a fresh story that I hadn't seen yet. It think its safe to say that I had finally found what I was looking for when I came across "Ruby Sparks".
I went into this film not knowing what to expect; I knew it would inevitably entertain me because its from the people that brought us the fantastic "Little Miss Sunshine", but I didn't expect this movie to be almost flawless in my eyes.
The characters in this film are all likeable and relatable, and they also manage to be very funny. The film revolves around an anxious, young writer called Calvin (Paul Dano), who creates this girl called Ruby Sparks (Zoe Kazan), in his new novel he is writing.
Little does Calvin know that this girl would actually somehow inexplicably come to life. This event leads to all sorts of wonderfully sweet and hilarious situations that you are fully invested in. The two characters end up falling in love, and the audience gets to watch their relationship progress.
Calvin eventually discovers that he can control Ruby's actions by writing down commands on his typewriter. He can manipulate her into doing anything humanly possible such as becoming fluent in French instantaneously.
This addition to the story leaves the audience intrigued and makes them question what they would do if they possessed that level of power. I personally couldn't find anything wrong with this film; everything was spot-on: the script, the direction, the acting.
.. everything was perfect. If you are an avid fan of movies, then I implore you to see this film. Unmissable.
