Review of Rubber (2010) by Anna-Lisa G — 20 Jul 2011
I have an intense passion for all B movies, so I was very excited about this movie. Come on, a psychic tire that can blow people up telepathically? What's not to love?!
A lot, it would seem. I'm probably harder on this movie than I would be with most films that would fall under the "So bad it's good" genre, but only because this film is INTENTIONAL. Awful movies are a fine art. Most of the time, the best of the best...of the worst (think Troll 2 and The Room) are unintentionally terrible and created by accident. If you intentionally set out to create a stupid movie, it's going to be difficult, because our standards are higher. (Oh, how ironic..).
However, Rubber is just a hodgepodge of exploding objects and a stupid tire. I feel like they could have done SO much more with it, but instead tried to take it in some failed "art film" direction. It's a weak enough premise, but it's even shakier when they add zero character development. By the time you mix in some lackluster, completely unbelievable storyline, it just fails entirely. The only reason I even gave it such a high review is because it's frustratingly well filmed. It's pleasant to watch, but everything else about the film is just painful.
From now on, I'll keep my terrible movie viewings on the Unintentional Side.
