Review of Rubber (2010) by Tom R — 10 Aug 2011
Wow, it IS possible to make a movie with premise that sounds awesomely bad and make it uninteresting! Rubber has some very good practical special effects, but it is not funny, not scary, and sadistically boring.
Not since Funny Games has a movie been so irritatingly aware that it thinks it's more clever than the audience. It could have been a simple, stupid movie about a tire that rolls around and kills many; it would have been stupid, but it also would have kept attention and unpatronizing.
It tries (ahem, blatantly tells you) to have "no reason" mentality of the movie yet it edits between showing the killer tire and a test audience making comments about the film from afar. This audience ruins the premise and makes the film more annoying to watch, spouting unsubtle commentary on the movie industry.
Rubber is a test of how long you can watch the film before shutting it off. If you want to see it just for the exploding heads, go see Scanners instead.
