Review of Rubber (2010) by David K — 12 Dec 2011
This is one of those films you're either gonna adore or detest. Even if you think it was just absolutely stupid and pointless, you have to give it points for originality. Having a muderous animate object as a protagonist was an interesting concept and it played it pretty well.
Quentin Dupieux did a great job at messing with the 4th wall and other dramatic elements. The arc with the spectators was just brilliant. I really enjoyed that monologue in the opening scene of the film, it had a real existential flavour to it that lingered for the whole movie.
The plot was very odd, but strangely compelling at the same time. The sequences with the tire rolling in the dessert to music were quite aesthetic in my opinion. This movie was just so far from the norm I couldn't help but fall in love with it.
A true contemporary wonder of cinema.
