Review of Rope (1948) by Annelies S — 11 Jan 2009
This movie based on a British play is supposed to be about homosexuality but since it was forbidden to mention this sixty years ago I didn't even assume the two protagonists were gay!
This movie is filled with verbal jokes and puns and clues. Since the viewer knows there is a body in the chest all these expressions had a very dubious meaning. Examples as We're really killing two birds with one stone or I hope you knock 'em dead! or someone telling the strangler These hands will bring you great fame! and As a child I used to read quite a few books! ... Oh we all used to do strange things in our childhood! made this picture really macabre and humorous. Definitely when the movie is based on a party where the dinner table was in fact a coffin with a fresh body in it!
For once the screenwriter Arthur Laurents has done a better job than Hitchcock. Brilliant screenplay, but it had to be brilliant since the entire movie scenery is based in one room. The dialogues and clues made it another must see suspense movie!
