Review of Rope (1948) by Chetan V — 03 Mar 2010
Probably Hitchcock's most underrated film, and one of my very favorites. The greatness of the film lies in Hitch's mellow storytelling ability, where a single room, a single piece of rope and a single dinner party can shed as much suspense as a nuclear war threat or a giant shark.
The acting is incredible, with Dall and Granger jump-starting the tale with perfect chemistry and Stewart finishing it off. The studio wanted Cary Grant for the role, claiming that Stewart was box office poison- proving that studios have always been incompetent and that it isn't just a new development.
Allowing himself only a few cuts, Hitchcock proves that real tension comes from the quiet space in between real people, and the crazy things they'll do in the right situations.
