I gave this movie only three stars because I was so disappointed to find out afterwards that it was not based on a true story. Excellent story-telling, but ultimately packed far less punch because it was fiction. I was bowled over by the scene of Jack's rescue and the extraordinary police work done in the ensuing minutes to find "Ma," only to feel duped when being told later that that's not anything that really happened. Great acting by Jacob Tremblay playing Jack and Brie Larson playing Ma. She deserved the Oscar. Great directing.
