Review of Room (2015) by Tony D — 08 Jul 2016
Echoing the long-term abductions & rapes of Elizabeth Smart, Gina de Jesus, Michelle Knight & Amanda Berry, Room is told from the standpoint of a young woman captive for 7 years & her 5-year-old. Joy (Brie Larson) focuses relentlessly on her child's survival. Jack (Jacob Tremblay) has known no other life beyond their Room. Now, the time has come when mother and son must take desperate measures to escape.
Brie Larson rivets the viewer's attention with an intense maternal care & desperation to break them free. Jacob Tremblay flawlessly evokes the wonder and terror of a child who has never seen the world abruptly confronted with a kaleidescope of new experiences. Joan Allen also delivers a nuanced, warm warm performance in a key role.
