Review of Romeo Must Die (2000) by Rebecca Z — 17 Jun 2011
Good example of a bad 90s action movie (I'm aware it came out in 2000). Riding the coattails of the gangster and Asian martial arts flicks, it tries to mix both and fails spectacularly. It's not that Romeo Must Die is a bad movie; it's that it's scripted poorly.
You never understand the motivations of any of the villains; hell, one of them is barely revealed until the last ten minutes. It tries to be both a love story and a dueling rival gangster families story, but it simply doesn't give enough time to either one of these subplots.
The action scenes make no sense; half of them are either gratuitous or given no reason to occur (see: the football scene). It's unfortunate, because it has all the elements of a good action movie.
However, the finished product is muddled, dated, and all over the place, really.
