Review of Romancing the Stone (1984) by Deb S — 28 Apr 2010
Romancing the Stone is a classic 80?s film about the adventures of the beautiful, but naive romance novelist Joan Wilder (played by Kathleen Turner) who gets much more than she bargained for when she must rescue her kidnapped sister in South America in exchange for a treasure map. Along the way she receives the reluctant help of happy-go-lucky Jack Colton (Michael Douglas) who demands to know what he had gotten himself into until he finally sees the map, and convinces Wilder that possessing the jewel will give her greater leverage with the kidnappers. Danny DeVito steals every scene here as one of the inept member of the thugs who have kidnapped Turner's sister.
This is a nice little film filled with lots of romance, suspense, action and comedy making it one of the best adventure films of the 80's; that is helped by likeable performances from Turner, Douglas and DeVito.
