Review of Romance & Cigarettes (2005) by Yury M — 19 Mar 2008
Nick Murder: "Two things a man should be able to do... be romantic and smoke his brains out".
It was a pure delight to watch this movie. I can't believe it took poor John Turturro three years to release it. It is not a movie without flaws but it is an incredibly enjoyable one. I loved everything - cast, dialogue, songs, dancing, set design. I love the way he mixed reality with some sort of movie magic. Federico Fellini, Woody Allen and Emir Kusturica must have been his inspiration.
The story is simple but effective. And James Gandolfini is in it. I miss him so much after finishing The Sopranos. If you like unconventional (and R-rated) musicals, like I do, then this is for you!
