Review of Romance & Cigarettes (2005) by Kacy W — 20 Mar 2008
Wow, my kind of musical; which is one of my least favorite genres. Dirty, strange & fun. The cast don't COVER classics & butcher them (like Across The overrated Universe, which I couldn't even finish) & are not playing it safe with cookie cutter like boredom (Chicago). It's a sing along musical with the cast singing over the awesome soundtrack AND having something to do with the plot (again, A.C.U. you lost me with randomness that felt really forced).
Turturro & his pals the Coen bros. make an oddity that is definitely not suitable for mass consumption, but fuck the masses; they need to gassed anyways.
The entire ensemble really worked for me, some highlights: Busecmi's best whiny guy delivery since Reservoir Dogs, I LOVED Winslet as a gleefully raunchy gal, & Walken singing Tom Jones into a bloody knife, doing his trademark awesome footwork, & trying to shank a bunch of cops is priceless.
