Review of Roman Holiday (1953) by Edgar C — 04 Apr 2010
Wyler, at the top of his game, masterfully reinvents the "Romeo-&-Juliet journalist" concept of Capra's It Happened One Night (1934), setting the plot in Rome and juxtaposing dazzling overtones of Hollywood's romance and Italy's romanticism. A breathtaking photography, iconic scenes of tear-inducing awe and absolutely unmatched performances, including an incredibly talented, early Hepburn, take this unusual-for-its-time masterpiece among the Golden Age's finest productions. A turn for the director in the right direction and, undoubtedly, his finest work.
99/100.
