Review of Roma (2018) by Anne S — 03 Jan 2019
This reviewer said it best: " Roma is a photogenic homage to the director's 1970s upbringing and a solemn view of the female malaise caused by male absenteeism with the underbelly of social unrest in the periphery.
Like his last Spanish-language film, Roma is a plot-less drama structurally designed for an intellectual, observational audience willing to adhere to the cinema of character voyeurism. Its slow crawl to its blurry and sometimes elusive implications highlight the fleeting cinematographic grandeur of Cuarón's observational treatments in comparison to his more plot-based excursions.
The difference in treatment is why Roma is a crashing bore and Cuarón's 2006's film Children of Men is still a relevant, captivating masterpiece he's has yet to top.".
