Review of Rollerball (2002) by Mike U — 02 Jul 2004
The original movie version of Rollerball is by far the better version. Here we have a corporate controlled world with its own version of gladiatorial combat. The game played in this movie is simple, brutal and to the point. I would have like it if they would have given us more background on what the world was like in this near future dystopia. All you're told is that the corporations run the show and that the sport of rollerball was designed to promote the group over the individual. This, of course, is what drives the conflict between Jonathan E. and the high ups at Energy. On that level, the movie does quite well. I would have liked a little more background about how the corporations came to power though.
