Review of Rollerball (2002) by Jonathan S — 28 Jul 2008
A surprisingly effective film that now looks prescient in its warning against corporate power and globalization. Also, the Rollerball sequences are still dynamic, with the extra zing that they use real stuntmen doing crazy stunts and not CGI stuntmen doing boring CGI stuff.
An American studio action movie that criticizes capitalism, corporations and the base instincts of voting public? An impossibility now. When everyone stands for the Corporate Hymn at the start of each Rollerball game, I think of the McDonalds theme as rewritten by Wagner.
Remade as a crappy movie warning against the dangers of Eastern European sports fads in 2002. Oh, Hollywood, when did your teat become so filled with rancid cheese?
