Review of Rollerball (2002) by Ola G — 10 Oct 2008
In 2018 corporations are the leaders of the world and the controllers of mankind. A violent futuristic game known as Rollerball is the recreational sport with a worldwide audience. The defending champions, the Houston team is led by veteran Jonathan E. (James Caan) and they are on their way to take the title again. The corporations fear that Jonathan E. has become more popular than the game itself and sees him as a threat that needs to be taken cared of. They want him to retire with no questions asked. Jonathan E. decides though to rebell against the corporations and continue to play the game he loves and know. This sacrifice do not come easy for Jonathan E. though..
This is a solid 70s sci fi classic that still carries a lot of interesting futuristic thoughts that feels close to what might come within the upcoming future. The story is strong and there is a good mix of action/emotional aspects. Always liked James Caan and he delivers a good performance as Jonathan E.
It bothers me that we had to endure the fact that a remake of "Rollerball" was made in 2000. A sad attempt where Chris Klein was put in the lead role. Chris Klein.... Why? Oh why first of all and second of all, it was such a mess from every possible angle. Not even close to Norman Jewisons "Rollerball". See the original "Rollerball" and enjoy this piece of film, that questions the rise of the corporation and the effect of it in our society.
