Review of Rollerball (2002) by Bobby L — 16 Jan 2010
James Caan is excellent here, with a solid supporting cast. As goofy and cheesey as this whole thing, it doesn't have some excellent ideaology, even if it doesn't quite pay off or play out it's own themes.
The sports action is fast, and well shot, keeping you interested, even when, by the end, the rules are still somewhat unclear. The director's best thing is framing. He can frame very well. In just a simple talking scene, in an apartment, we get the two guys on either side, one laying down across the couch.
Caan, on the other couch, with his woman, and a roaring fire dead center. The shot is sustained for a good portion of the scene, and makes for a very engaging seqeunece. There are more examples of such framing, but I am going to say, see the movie, enjoy the cheese, love the framing.
